Reflections of the Son
A Mother's Prayer
Dr. Johnny Pope is a preacher of the Gospel whose life and ministry speak of God’s amazing grace, enduring mercy, and unconditional love. A Mother’s Prayer illustrates a part of his story.
“For a couple of years in my teenage life, I was away from God. When I would come home in the evening, I would find my dress shoes on my bed. Mother literally prayed over my shoes with her tears falling on them. She told the Lord, ‘He’s yours, take him, use him…and if You would Lord, make a preacher out of him.’ She told me she was claiming, ‘…How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel…’(Rom. 10:15). I did not know what she was doing until after I gave my all to Christ and surrendered to preach. Since March 29, 1970, a week has not passed without God giving me the opportunity to preach. On any given week I preach an average of five sermons per week.
Paul De Luna . . . heard me tell this story and was moved (I believe from God) to paint this moving story of a very important phase of my journey toward God. I pray this will be an encouragement of every mother and father to never give up on their kids. Pray the price!”
[This] painting is a great reminder that God answers prayer. ‘He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.’ (Psalm 102:17)

Bald Eagle Head Study
I have always loved the bald eagle. It is part of God’s creation and it is the national bird and symbol of the United States of America. What is most glorious about this bird is its spirit of freedom.
I have heard many illustrations on this magnificent bird, but the one that has inspired me most is that of its extraordinary vision. The bald eagle possesses an eyelid that is translucent and serves as a wonderful defense mechanism. When other birds seek to pester the bald eagle, it engages this eyelid and flies directly into the sun. Unable to withstand the blinding light, the enemy flees as the bald eagle soars directly into the light.
The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. (Psalm 27:1–3)

This depiction of Christ’s scourging is the first of a series that will illustrate His sacrificial death.
Then he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all things that are written by the prophets concerning the Son of man shall be accomplished. For he shall be delivered unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and spitefully entreated, and spitted on: And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again. (Luke 18:33)

About the Art
Inspired by one my favorite Christmas songs, Giving My Best illustrates a truth that lies within the well-known song. The boy, who is too poor to afford a gift, redeems the opportunity by offering his best. With all of his heart he plays for infant Jesus, the King of Kings. Christmas tradition calls us each year to give of ourselves. Will you give God the one gift that you alone can give? Give your heart to the One Who gave His all.“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.” John 3:16

Hands That Speak
Merry Christmas
He Who is the eternal Word (Jn. 1:1–2) and the creative Word (Gen.1:1) is He Who became flesh—the incarnate Word (Jn. 1:14). Though it remains a mystery that God would become man and dwell with us, the reality that He did is reason to celebrate. Rejoice! A new day has dawned. What the law—established by God and given by Moses—required in payment, Jesus Christ ultimately paid on the Cross. Jesus was the perfect Lamb of God slain as the final sacrifice for the sin of the whole world (Jn. 1:29). This is how Jesus (One with the Father) is both the fulfillment of the law and fullness of grace. From His saving grace to His all-sufficient grace, there is peace on earth in the hearts of those that believe in Him.
Let His light illuminate the darkness, see the hands that speak deliverance from judgment, and place your life in those mighty hands that will never let you go.
“Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12

The Concept
Life can deliver some painful blows, but knowing the Master brings hope to the discouraged and strength to the weak. Refiner’s Fire is about experiencing completion through brokenness. Whether that brokenness results from a past failure or uncontrollable circumstance, there is Good News! A Redeemer lives ready to restore. God’s love, forgiveness, and all-sufficient grace are free for those who call on His name. Yes, scars may remain, but His grace is truly amazing.“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” II Corinthians 12:9–10
The Composition
This particular rendition is the final of four attempts that spanned over four years. With each rendition came periods of artistic growth, making this whole endeavor very special to me.Patterned after the blacksmith’s work process, the foreground of the piece begins with the actual forge where the chosen metal is first made ready. Next, the actual shaping takes place. It is here where the metal is wrought into a useful state. The anvil is designed with a three-part indentation, representing the supremacy of God’s will. Jesus showed us a perfect example of submission to the Father’s will the night before He was crucified, “Nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.” Luke 22:42
For the reason that God does many things beyond our comprehension, I chose to not portray the blacksmith’s face. By faith we trust His masterful touch as He positions the elements of life into a work that glorifies His name.
The Commission
At a point in life when the idea to combine art and song was developing in my heart, God gave me the opportunity to meet Christian recording artist Steve Green. The commission that resulted from our meeting led not only to this painting, but also personal confirmation to my Art ‘n Song ministry.“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

Reflections of the Son
This is a study that was done a couple of years ago. My plan is to revisit this piece in the near future with a similar composition. Lord-willing, this will become the signature piece for Reflections of the Son.®
